A petition calling for a Post Office to be established on Comleroy Road was submitted by Michael McMahon, Thomas Anderson and William Cox in 1889. The petition was signed by 51 local residents and drovers. Comleroy Road Post Office was officially opened on 15th February, 1890, with Michael McMahon of Garryowen as Postmaster. Mail was delivered on horseback from Kurrajong to Comleroy Road, then on to Upper Colo, Putty and Howes Valley, a journey of over two days. The Windsor and Richmond Gazette on Saturday 18 September, 1897 quoted the annual report of the Postmaster General, saying that 5,650 letters were posted in the Comleroy Road Post Office, nearly as many as the 8,960 letters posted at Kurrajong Post Office in that year. On 1st December, 1900, Comleroy Road Post Office was transferred to a residence near today's Comleroy Road School of Arts, with Anthony Quinn as Postmaster. Then on 11th July, 1913, AC Anderson took over as Postmaster, when the Comleroy Road Post Office was transferred to his residence opposite today's Hawkesbury Independent School on Comleroy Road. Comleroy Road Post Office was finally closed on 6th October, 1927. One reason for the closure was that most local residents were now conducting their postal business in Kurrajong, which had become a much larger business centre due to the Pansy Steam Train service there. |
